The JLPT N5 is the entry level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and the perfect first milestone for beginners. It certifies that you can understand basic Japanese used in everyday situations.

What is tested at JLPT N5?

Exam format

The N5 paper has three sections — Language Knowledge (vocabulary), Language Knowledge (grammar) & Reading, and Listening. You need an overall pass mark plus a minimum in each section, so balance your preparation.

A simple 3-month study plan

  1. Month 1: Master Hiragana and Katakana, then start core vocabulary.
  2. Month 2: Learn N5 grammar patterns and the first 50 kanji.
  3. Month 3: Practise past papers, timed listening, and revise weak areas.
