Once you clear N5, the next question is how far to go. JLPT N4 vs N3 is the level range most employers care about, so let us compare them.
JLPT N4
- ~1,500 words, ~300 kanji
- Understand basic everyday Japanese
- Enough for many Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) roles
JLPT N3
- ~3,700 words, ~650 kanji
- Understand everyday Japanese to a fair degree
- The sweet spot for IT, engineering and office jobs
Which should you target?
For blue-collar and SSW visa routes, N4 is often enough. For white-collar careers in IT and business, aim for N3 or higher — it dramatically widens your options and salary.
